How to summarise WhatsApp chats and groups in ChatGPT

Get the short version of a busy WhatsApp group or chat in ChatGPT: what was decided, who is waiting on you, and what still needs doing. No more scrolling up for ages.

The problem

A busy WhatsApp group can pile up hundreds of messages in a day. Scrolling back to work out what was decided, who is waiting on you and what still needs doing takes ages, and ChatGPT on its own cannot see your WhatsApp. Exporting a chat and pasting it in works once, but it is slow and out of date by the next morning. WhatSync connects your WhatsApp to ChatGPT, so you can ask for the short version of any chat or group whenever you need it.

Questions to copy into ChatGPT

Ask in your own words. These are the kinds of questions people ask most.

“What did I miss on WhatsApp today?”

“Summarise the Site B group from the last 3 days. What should I do next?”

“Who is waiting on a reply from me, and what do they need?”

“Where do things stand with this client? List what we agreed and what is still open.”

“List every decision made in the project group this week, with who made it.”

Set it up

It takes about 5 minutes. Your WhatsApp keeps working on your phone as normal.

  1. Connect WhatsApp with a QR code. Sign in to your WhatSync dashboard and click Show QR code. On your phone, open WhatsApp, go to Linked devices, tap Link a device, and scan the code. It links the same way WhatsApp Web does, so there is nothing to install.
  2. Choose your chats and groups. One-to-one chats are saved from the moment you connect, and you can keep certain people out. On WhatSync Plus and Pro all your WhatsApp groups are saved too. Turn off any you want kept out, like the family chat.
  3. Add WhatSync in ChatGPT. Click Add to ChatGPT, connect the app, and sign in with the same email you used for the dashboard. Then ask ChatGPT about your WhatsApp. If it does not use WhatSync on its own, start your question with “Use WhatSync to…”.

Tips for better answers

  • Name the chat or group, for example "the Site B group" or "my chat with the accountant".
  • Give a time range: today, since Monday, the last 3 days.
  • Say the shape you want: a few bullet points, a to-do list, or a short message you can forward.
  • Ask "which messages is that from?" to see the original messages behind any point.
  • Ask for "anything I need to reply to" to turn a summary into a to-do list.

What it cannot do

Better to know these before you start.

  • Only messages from the moment you connect. Old WhatsApp history is not brought in. If you connect today, ChatGPT can see today onwards, so connect before you need it.
  • Groups are on WhatSync Plus and Pro. The 7-day free trial covers your one-to-one chats, up to 500 messages. See pricing.
  • Voice notes, photos and scanned documents are read on Pro. On every plan ChatGPT reads text messages, links, and PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. Without Pro it only knows a photo or voice note by its caption and file name.
  • Read only. ChatGPT can read and search what you connected. It cannot send WhatsApp messages. It can write a reply for you to copy and send yourself.
  • New messages take a minute or two to show up. If something that just arrived is missing, ask again shortly.

Questions

Do I need WhatSync to summarise a WhatsApp chat in ChatGPT?
Not for a one-off. You can use WhatsApp's Export chat option and upload the file to ChatGPT. That covers one chat at one moment. WhatSync is for when you want to ask about your chats any time, across several chats and groups, without exporting each one again.
Can it summarise a WhatsApp group?
Yes, on WhatSync Plus and Pro. All your groups are saved, and you can leave any out. The free trial covers one-to-one chats.
Does the summary include voice notes and photos?
On Pro, yes. Voice notes are turned into text in any language, and photos and scans are read, so they count in the summary. Without Pro ChatGPT only knows a voice note or photo was sent, with its caption.
Can I save or share a summary?
Yes. Ask ChatGPT to save the summary in WhatSync, and ask for a share link when you want to send it to someone. Check it before you share, as chats often have personal details in them.
Can ChatGPT summarise my old messages?
No. WhatSync only saves messages that arrive after you connect, so summaries start from that day.
